Las transparencias de gran formato de Jeff Wall, realizadas en cibachrome y montadas sobre cajas de luz , han ejercido una gran influencia en las últimas tres décadas, un período en el que el modo de concebir la relación entre arte e historia ha experimentado un profundo cambio. Es uno de los últimos artistas que trabaja a partir de una visión lineal de la historia, para luego replantearse la relación de su obra con esa perspectiva histórica, que ha dejado de ser sostenible. Las composiciones de Wall, tanto en color como en blanco y negro , mantienen un diálogo constante con la pintura de género del siglo XIX, lo que le convierte sin lugar a dudas en un pintor de la vida moderna, según la expresión de Charles Baudelaire. Además de un profundo ensayo de Michael Newman, este libro reproduce la obra completa de Jeff Wall hasta la actualidad y recoge sus principales escritos sobre la experiencia creativa de otros importantes artistas contemporáneos.

Exposició comissariada per Sam Stroudzé i Christian Delage. Després de passar per Brussel·les, Lausanne, Hamburg, Montpeller, París i Bolonya, arriba al CaixaForum de Barcelona una mostra de més de 300 documents relacionats amb Chaplin i el seu personatge Charlot: fotografies de rodatge, cartells, àlbums de premsa dels Chaplin Studios, fragments de pel·lícules, pel·lícules domèstiques.
Val la pena destacar la petita part de l’exposició dedicada als documents espanyols relacionats amb Charlot.
Quant a la traducció, com que en català no tenim tradició de traduir els títols de Charlot, s’ha optat per deixar els títols originals i donar entre parèntesis en català la traducció de la versió castellana, més entenedora per al públic d’aquí. La principal font de consulta per als títols ha estat The International Movie Database i la Base de dades de pel·lícules qualificades del Ministeri de Cultura.

Océano ha tenido a bien enviarnos por navidades un ejemplar de Creadores de imágenes. Fotógrafos contemporáneos, que han publicado este año. Se trata de una recopilación de entrevistas a algunos de los profesionales que más destacan en el campo de la fotografía en la actualidad, como David LaChapelle, Mario Sorrenti, Martin Parr, Naomi Harris o Ellen von Unwerth. Se han organizado en siete apartados, cada uno de ellos dedicado a cuatro fotógrafos: Arte, Documental, Moda y publicidad, Retrato, Nueva generación, Museos y galerías y Agencias, prensa y editoriales. La edición está muy cuidada, con una excelente selección de más de ciento cincuenta imágenes.

«Passió pel dibuix. De Poussin a Cézanne. Obres mestres de la col·lecció Prat» presenta un recull extraordinari de dibuixos reunits al llarg de més de trenta anys pel col·leccionista Louis-Antoine Prat. La col·lecció Prat té un fons de 230 dibuixos, entre els quals el comissari Pierre Rosenberg n’ha seleccionat cent que permeten realitzar un recorregut per l’art francès des del segle XVII fins a les primeres avantguardes.
«El que és clar que no ens deixarà indiferents és la perfecta qualitat de cadascun dels dibuixos, com també aquesta mena d’atmosfera familiar que sembla que els ha unit de manera totalment natural, com si sempre haguessin anat plegats i no s’haguessin de separar mai. Rarament una col·lecció s’ha erigit en creació amb més evidència i coherència. Separadament, cada làmina ens sedueix, ens captiva; junts, aquests dibuixos ens instrueixen, constitueixen una lliçó d’història de l’art, una lliçó en silenci i potser encara per això més atractiva.»

In September, while in Boston, Massachusetts, we stopped at the new Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), a breathtaking 65,000-square-foot building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and located on the harbour at Fan Pier, in south Boston. Look at the centre of the picture below and you’ll see the end of the inclined research room, where you can sit in front of a Mac to get information on the museum and its work while having the impression that you’re going to fall into the bay.
There we saw a really interesting Louise Bourgeois exhibition that you can visit until the 2nd of March, 2008. Yes, it includes one of those lovely 30-foot-tall bronze spiders that the artist, who’s ninety-six this year, loves to call Maman, like the one she put on display in 1999 at the Tate Modern, when she was the first artist to fill the Turbine Hall. Or like the one now outside the Guggenheim Bilbao. Or maybe they’re all the same one. You can also find other disturbing pieces, like Cell (Hand and Mirrors) or Janus Fleuri.
We have recently translated into Spanish the press material for the first of the Dia Art Foundation’s projects at New York’s Hispanic Society (it’s going to be a three-year collaboration). The exhibition has been conceived by Belgian artist Francis Alÿs, who lives and works in Mexico City. Over the last two decades, Alÿs has put together a large collection of nearly identical images of fourth-century Saint Fabiola, all based on a lost original painted in the nineteenth century by the French academic artist Jean-Jacques Henner. The exhibition includes nearly 300 images from the artist’s collection.
The paintings are installed in the Society’s mahogany-paneled North Building Galleries until 6 April 2008. Gathered from flea markets, antique shops, and private collections throughout Europe and America, Alÿs’s collection offers a window onto aesthetic, sociological, and theological values over the past century and more.

On a recent visit to New York we had the chance to go to NYU’s Grey Art Gallery to see a show we’ve done work for, ‘The Geometry of Hope. Latin American Abstract Art from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection’. We really enjoyed the exhibition, which is on until the 8th of December, 2007.
It’s the most comprehensive overview to date of geometrical abstraction in Latin America from the 1930s to the 1970s, it includes 115 works from the acclaimed Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection and was originally organized by the Blanton Museum of Art, at The University of Texas at Austin, where it was seen earlier this year.
This is what Grey Art Gallery Director Lynn Gumpert had to say: “This exhibition promises to be an eye-opening experience for our visitors, especially those for whom the term ‘modern Latin American art’ generally connotes figurative painting or political murals. With many superb works from one of the world’s great collections of modern and contemporary art from Latin America, ‘The Geometry of Hope’ will reveal that abstraction south of the border is anything but provincial and, indeed, developed within and influenced the international avant-garde.”
The Grey Art Gallery is New York University’s fine-arts museum and it’s on Washington Square Park, in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Exhibitions and programs at the Gallery focus on art’s historical, cultural, and social contexts, with special emphasis on experimentation and interpretation.
